Hot dogs/frappes

It's a bit of a modern-day anomaly. Dropped in the middle of a nondescript city street is a take-out joint that puts retro-revisionist fast-food restaurants such as Johnny Rockets to shame. Simco's Takeout is the perfect place to check out on a warm evening (be patient, one will come).

MORE INFORMATION
Simco's Takeout, 1509 Blue Hill Ave, Mattapan. 617-296-3800. [Get directions].

Boasting the largest "old tyme" hot dogs (we're not entirely sure what that means), Simco's serves foot-long dogs from under a blaze of nostalgic neon signs. The restaurant has been a local institution since 1935. A fire destroyed the building in 1990, but Nick Fopopoulos rebuilt it and added several Greek dishes to the menu.

The only beverage suitable for washing down a Simco's foot long is a frappe - the chocolate version is choked with ice cream and more filling than a dinner from Ken's Steak House.

There's no place to sit inside, so you'll have to dine al auto. One more thing: Unless you don't mind your car smelling like hot dogs for a week, pick up an air freshener.
