MORE INFORMATION
Hong Kong Restaurant & Lounge, 1238 Mass. Ave., Cambridge. 617-864-5311. [Get directions].

Most everyone heads to the Hong Kong for the fruity scorpion bowls and comedy shows, but the food at this venerable institution is also worth noting. Here's where to go when that fancy strikes you for sweet and sour chicken covered in a syrupy red sauce with pineapples and maraschino cherries. Even on a Friday night, during prime dining hours, there's usually a table to be found downstairs. The staff lingers around filling takeout orders and chatting while tables of Harvard students pick through piles of pork fried rice. The constant string of '70s pop tunes makes the atmosphere a touch depressing, but the sugar rush from the red sweet and sour sauce quickly compensates.
