Fried chicken

MORE INFORMATION
Fontaine's Topsy's Restaurant, 1436 VFW Parkway, West Roxbury. 617-327-7600. [Get directions].

Colonel Sanders has nothing on Fontaine's. From the flapping neon chicken on the sign to the buttery biscuits that melt in your mouth, this is the restaurant that time forgot. You can order a bucket of fried chicken to take home, but you'll miss an essential part of the Fontaine's experience: sitting in the windowless dining room early Saturday or Sunday evenings and eavesdropping on the diehard regulars (you won't have to strain your ears). Fontaine's is not appropriate for a first date, but when you're ready to settle down, you can learn a lot about a person by the way he eats fried chicken.
