Wally's Cafe
With worn Formica tables and counters, a linoleum floor and brick walls lined with pictures of jazz greats and lesser-knowns (all of whom have played the tiny stage in back of the bar), Wally's is about as authentic as they come. It advertises live music 365 days a year, serving up some of the city's best jazz, funk, and blues. Performances run from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., but get there by 8:30 if you want to get a seat as the bar's capacity is only 50. When the piano's idle, the jukebox is alive with jazz and R&B, and the knowledgeable regulars provide running commentary. But if you're a newcomer to jazz, don't be intimidated. "I wasn't really into jazz when I started," says bartender Laurie Wood, "but now I love the music."
