Jamaica Plain
Midway Cafe

It has the look and feel of a roadhouse bar - lots of neon beer signs, a door covered with bumper stickers, a long, well-used wooden bar - and five nights a week it sounds like one, too.

Get directions

Don't let the "cafe" part fool you; the only food you are likely to get here is free popcorn.

The Midway is a music bar. Owners Jay and Dave Balerna saw a need for live music in the area not long after buying the Jamaica Plain institution 12 years ago, according to bartender Smilin' Dave. "They grabbed the ball and ran with it." Now as many as three bands play on a weekend night, from original rock to reggae to rockabilly - everything of the get-your-
butt-on-the-dance-floor variety.

Monday is Movie Madness night. You have your choice of the wide-screen TV in the stage area or one of the sets over the bar. The audio is hooked up to the sound system.

Evonne Wetzner introduces the several feature and local independent films shown each week. Recent themes have been director Stanley Kubrick, blaxploitation, and gangster films.
