Lush and elegant, but very comfortable and cozy, the bar at Anago is one of the loveliest in the city. It has the feel of a hotel bar from a bygone era: a time when men always wore suits and women wore stockings with seams, and everyone wore hats. For inspiration, Sandra Fairbank pored over old photographs of hotel bars, such as that at the St. Regis Hotel in New York, to get ideas.

You can order from the regular dinner menu or from the bar menu. Try sharing the tuna tartare, a mound of fresh chopped tuna topped with flying fish roe and accompanied by strips of cucumber and a piece of smoked salmon; the crab wontons, three plump balls of crab meat, lightly fried so that the delicate crab flavor is not overwhelmed; or the pizza margherita, a simple and satisfying brick oven pizza with tomato, mozzarella, and basil. Don't be shy about asking the bartenders about the wine. They will be happy to give you advice and small tastes of the by-the-glass selections. The 1997 Falesco Vittiano sangiovese is a particularly good bet.
