Liz Augustine and her partner of Maynard take the T to Charles Street, near one of their favorite shops, Rugg Road (for its handmade paper). Then they walk across the Public Garden ("I like seeing the differences between the Garden's very proper, Brahmin, summertime face and its more down-to-earth appearance in wintertime"). They wind up walking the length of Newbury Street, from fancy to funky, enjoying the people-watching as much as the window-shopping. Nonee Legge of Medfield says she and her husband don their "good clothes, suitable walking shoes," and armed with their senior citizen passes, take the late-morning train into Boston. They start off with a free organ concert at noon at Trinity Church and finish off at the Westin Hotel. Listening to the grand piano, "we sink into those comfortable seats away from the bustle of the crowds, rest our feet and have tea or wine and a dessert served to us." Patty Reilly of Melrose says her family enjoys an annual "Christmas in the City" that costs them little more than train fare. They walk from North Station to Faneuil Hall ("always a big adventure" thanks to the Big Dig), browse the shops, visit the Enchanted Village (now at City Hall), check out the store windows at Downtown Crossing, and finish up by admiring the lights on the Common.
