Over the years, Donna Griffiths of Lexington and her sons have collected enough miniature houses to erect a subdivision under their tree. They make an annual trip to Lexington Gardens to buy a house, decorations, and little people from its Christmas Village. "You should have seen their amazement and wonderment as they wandered around trying to decide what village pieces we should start our collection with."

Mark and Maureen Crawford Hentz make an annual midnight pilgrimage to L.L. Bean's in Freeport, Maine. "There are tons of staff around and no one seems to be tired," Maureen writes, adding that monogramming is ready in the next morning.

Janet Jang of Milton scours grocery, craft, and department stores, not for gifts but for ideas. Among them: wreaths made of pretzels tied with shoestring licorice, glass ornaments filled with pasta, and monogrammed clothespin reindeer.
