Spreading the spirit

Ann Burger of North Billerica started a tradition of donating a toy to charity for each of her sons. "We pick a child the same age as my boys and they help pick out a gift that they think the child would like."

For Paula Mason of Billerica, holiday cheer begins in prison. Every year she gives out gifts to children whose fathers are in MCI-Billerica. As part of an effort by Vision New England's Prison Ministry, members of her church (Grace Community) buy the presents. "What a blessing for me to see these kids choose a gift to take home from their 'dads.'"

Susan Corbit of Manchester and her family help prepare the Thanksgiving meal at the Crombie Street Shelter in Salem. "It is a day where everyone seems to forget their prejudice, as youngsters and oldsters work side-by-side, families of various ethnic origins come together to help the less fortunate."
