Joyful soul

I was a young woman when I attended one of the first performances of Langston Hughes' "Black Nativity," directed by Elma Lewis. It is a joyful gospel song-play about the Christmas story with children and adults from the community performing together.

I started taking my daughter as a young child so she could appreciate the children's role in the Christmas story. We have been in the audience most years, feeling Christmas in our hearts only after attending "Black Nativity."

We are still thrilled by the lighted processional when everyone comes in singing, to the very end when the youngest child sings the final solo note. Each year we try to take a new friend with us to introduce another person to such a wonderful experience.

After the performance we drive around Boston looking at the lights on the Common and in other parts of the city.

My daughter is now a young woman, as I was when I attended my first performance of "Black Nativity." This is one Christmas event that we still enjoy together, and it brings to us a joyful soul at the holiday season.
