A few doors down from Molly's is Cafe Porto Bello, which brings a taste of the North End to East Broadway.
Owners Vinnie Amato and Steve Costa worked as chefs at North End restaurants before opening Porto Bello three years ago. "Most of our regulars are split between new residents and typical Southie people," says Amato. The 12-table bistro is also attracting people from other neighborhoods. "We have steady customers from the South End, as far away as Arlington, and even some from the North End who say they find the parking easier here in Southie." In their unpretentious restaurant (formerly Tony's Pizza Center), Amato and Costa say they strive to give their dishes a fresh, light touch. Entrees range from $7.95 to $10.95, and the most expensive appetizer is $4.95 (eggplant in pesto cream sauce). Among the house specialties is chicken carciofi, sauteed chicken with artichoke hearts. To top off the meal, Porto Bello's offers zaplogne - a peaches, brandy, whip cream, and marsala sauce delicacy - and its own tiramisu. Now, with plans for more tables, Amato and Costa appear to have found a home in Southie.
