In March 1996, Cathy Walsh converted an old furniture store into the cozy Cranberry Cafe, which serves cappuccino, mocha, and smoothies.

Among the items on the menu are sprouts, hummus and bread, and a sardine sandwich - hardly lunch-pail fare. But Walsh also serves up conventional sandwiches (turkey, tuna, roast beef, corned beef, chicken taragon), which can be taken out or munched on at the counter or one of the six tables.

"We have guys that have been drinking coffee on the block for 60 years and then all the time I see new faces,'' says Walsh. "It's amazing to see the changes."

Across the street, at the corner of Broadway and K Street, is Dewberry's Dogs. Not your average clip-and-clean canine grooming parlor, it sells natural pet foods, exotic dietary supplements, shampoos, and colognes.

Diane Dewberry, who specializes in preparing pooches for dog shows, opened the shop six years ago and soon discovered that many of her clients were new residents. "They all seem to have dogs," says the 15-year Southie resident. "And this year business is booming."

In a sign of the times, Dewberry has to move her shop because her landlord is converting the building into a day spa. Her new address will be 357 West Broadway.

Another popular spot on Broadway is The Fish Pier, a takeout restaurant that specializes in, you guessed it, seafood.

On a recent Thursday evening I waited behind several young couples and two seniors, all of whom ordered the seafood platter. So I jumped in as well. The huge plate contained scallops, shrimp, clams, and scrod as well as fries. All light and crisp. It wasn't Kelley's Landing, but what is?

The dinner prices range from $7 to $10.25.
