The Southie challenge: finding a place to park

Longtime residents will tell you that in South Boston politics and parking are contact sports.

The former is well documented and the latter can be observed by driving along Broadway at most any time of the day. Double parking - and even triple parking - is an accepted part of Southie's paved landscape and it appears to be a genetic trait: It has been that way since the '60s.

Many drivers pull into double-parkings openings as if they're metered spots and then go about their business. If your car is hemmed in by a double-parker, lean on your horn and watch 20 heads pop out from storefronts to see if they're the offending blocker.

Add some snow to this mix and chaos can reign.

Fend for yourself and patience seem to be the watchwords here. Along several side streets off Broadway you may find open spots, particularly the block of K Street between Broadway and Fourth Street. But otherwise it's just circle and wait for an opening.

- J.T.
