The Wampanoag Indians, Falmouth's original inhabitants, called their home "Suckanesset," meaning "where the black wampum is found." Black wampum, which is actually shades of purple, is the interior shell of the quahog.

Quahogs (clams), still abundant in the Upper Cape, are a favorite among hungry tourists.
