Independence Day at the Esplanade

Fans get in the 4th of July mood Sunday at the Esplanade.

[ Photo Gallery ]
Keith Lockhart will lead the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra at the Hatch Shell by the Charles River on July 4th, Independence Day.

Festivities begin at noon, the Pops play from 8 to 10 p.m., and fireworks begin immediately afterward. During the fireworks celebration, Seiji Ozawa, music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the Esplanade Orchestra in Tchaikovsky's ''1812 Overture.''

Four large TV screens will be set up for viewing at various sites: Exeter Street, near Longfellow Bridge, and two back to back on Memorial Drive on the Cambridge side of the river.

Getting there
Concert-goers are encouraged to take public transportation. Subway riders should buy tokens ahead of time to cut down on lines at MBTA booths. Extra service will be provided on the Blue, Green, Orange, and Red lines.
