Independence Day at the Esplanade

Keith Lockhart will lead the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra at the Hatch Shell by the Charles River on July 4th, Independence Day. Begun in 1974, the brainchild of then conductor Arthur Fiedler and local businessman David Mugar, this Fourth of July concert has become an annual event. Festivities begin at noon and end with nightime fireworks over the Charles, set to music. Seiji Ozawa, music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, will conduct the Esplanade Orchestra in Tchaikovsky's ''1812 Overture.''
