COVER STORY

Club Boston
Jamaica Plain

BRENDAN BEHAN PUB
378 Centre St. Boston. 617-522-5386. (Get directions).

Food Free buffet Fri. 4:30-7 p.m.

Music Sunday: rockabilly. Mon.: reggae DJ. Tue.: rock or reggae. Wed.: rock. Sat. (on occasion): Irish sessiun.

Cover No

Age 21+

Atmosphere Casual and dark, dark, dark - literally. An interesting (and perhaps related) fact: Although the place doesn't exude grit, the benches are pretty darn sticky. Wearers of shorts, beware.

- A.F.

MIDWAY CAFE
3496 Washington St., Boston. 617-524-9038. (Get directions).

Food Despite the name, no edibles, except free popcorn.

Music Bands nightly, except Mon. and Thur. Styles range from blues to country to punk. Mon.: "Joe Schmoe's place" (darts, pool); Thur.: "Dyke Nyte" with DJ.

Cover Usually $3-$5

Age 21+

Atmosphere: Even with a blazing new sheen of varnish on the floorboards, the Midway is not a polished place. The other M-way in JP (the Milky Way) gets all the press, but don't neglect this dear little dive that's devoted itself to (primarily) local bands for more than a decade.

- A.F.

MILKY WAY LOUNGE
403 Centre St., Boston. 617-524-3740.

Music Wed.: "Solaris," ambient and techno with DJ Brother Cleve and Mark Flynn. Live bands other nights.

Cover Varies.

Age Wed. 18+; otherwise 21+

Atmosphere Hands-down, Boston's hippest bowling alley. Located below Bella Luna restaurant, the Milky Way runs from retro kitsch to modern club cool. The plush sofas offer a view of the pool tables, and the deep purple walls are softly lit by space-age fixtures. The music is as varied as the decor: one night, a DJ is spinning French disco, the next a salsa band is whooping it up on the small stage. A cross-section of Jamaica Plain residents, from lesbians to Latinos, regularly belly up to the bar.

- C.M.
