Vengeance at Dachau

Continued from page 33

Testimony of: Pfc. John P. Lee (Contd)

241 A No, sir, I didn't see any of that. If that happened I don't know anything about it. I did not see that happen at all.

242 Q Did you see any of the camp inmates abusing these prisoners of war or striking them or doing anything else to them?

A When we first picked them out at the first place I believe they pointed one SS out and the man grabbed towards the Polish inmate and was yelling in his face that he wasn't SS. So the Polish inmate hit him. From what I understood he said something about five years in there.

243 Q Can you understand any Polish?

A He said that in German, sir.

244 Q Can you understand any German?

A Just a very little what I have picked up, like counting a little and other words and things you really need to know.

245 Q I show you a picture identified as Exhibit "D", and ask if that looks familiar to you?

A I saw a few of them stand up, sir, but didn't see one crawling out like this. That may have happened after I left, for when the colonel ordered cease firing I left right away to rejoin my platoon.

246 Q I show you another picture identified as Exhibit "E", and ask if you saw any happening like that?

A No, sir, I did not see that. That probably happened after I left, but I didn't see anything like that.

247 Q Who is your buddy in the squad?

A The one I came into the company with is Robert McDonnel.

248 Q Is he in your squad?

A Yes.

249 Q Was he present with you when this shooting took place?

A No, sir, he was with the squad on the right flank of the camp.

250 Q Will you tell me now the names of any of the other enlisted men who were present when this shooting took place?

A Well, sir, when I was there I never noticed them. The one fellow was with me that I told you went into the hospital with me, George Larson, and he returned to the hospital to watch the prisoners who were there and I don't know who was on the machine gun or anything. I didn't take time out to notice who was with me.

251 Q What officers were there?

A The executive officer and the CO were the only ones that I saw.

252 Q You did not see the "M" Company officer?

A No, sir, I did not see him there.

253 Q Who was firing a Thompson sub-machine gun?

A I don't believe there was any there, sir.
