Cranberry growing has been an integral part of Harwich's economy since the early 1800's, when someone noticed that cranberry vines of low boggy areas did better when the winter winds blew sand over the vines. The cranberry industry's influence is reflected in Harwich's annual Cranberry Harvest Festival, and, of course, in its many cafe and coffee shops' cranberry desserts.
