At the Rotterdam Marathon yesterday, Tegla Loroupe fell short in her attempt to better what many consider the world's best marathon time of 2:20:47. (Deeming Loroupe's mark unfairly aided, Boston Marathon officials have maintained Ingrid Kristiansen's 2:21:06 as the time to beat for its bonus.)

Loroupe, the Kenyan who finished second here in 1996 to Uta Pippig, finished in 2:22:50 yesterday when her legs tightened from the cold and wind. It was a Kenyan sweep, as Japhet Kosgei won the men's race in 2:07:11.

In London, Joyce Chepchumba set a world best for a women-only race (the elite women start 30 minutes before the men) of 2:23:22 in victory, while Moroccan Abdelkader el Mouaziz won for the men in 2:07:57.

Coogan adds to resume

Last Tuesday, marathoner Gwyn Coogan received her doctorate degree in mathematics from the University of Colorado.

Coogan, a 1992 Olympian at 10,000 meters who barely missed making the 1996 marathon team, is married to Mark Coogan, a 1996 Olympian in the marathon and a native of Attleboro.

In November, the Coogans became parents for the second time.
