The 110th running of the Boston Marathon on April 17th will feature a total prize purse of $575,000. Athletes can earn tens of thousands of dollars more in bonus money if they set course records or run world-best times.

The $575,000 total is the same as last year's purse, and has been surpassed only by the $600,000 purse for the 100th running in 1996.

The men's and women's champions will receive $100,000. The second-place prize is $40,000, with third place finishers receiving $22,500. Prize awards are the same for men and women, and are 15-deep in the open division and five deep in the masters (age 40 and older) and wheelchair divisions.

The top prize in the men's and women's wheelchair divisions is $15,000, with $5,000 going to the runnersup. The masters winners each receive $10,000, with $5,000 going to the runnersup.

The marathon's bonus system remains the same as it has since 1986.

A world best (there is no world record for marathoning because courses are all different) will be rewarded with a $50,000 bonus. The current men's world best is 2:04:55, set at the 2003 Berlin Marathon by Kenyan Paul Tergat. The women's world best is 2:15:25, run by Paula Radcliffe of England in the 2003 London Marathon.

There are $25,000 bonuses for breaking either Cosmas Ndeti's course record of 2:07:15 for the men, set in 1994, or Margaret Okayo's record of 2:20:43 for the women.

There are cash prizes of $10,000 for men and women who set world bests in either the masters or wheelchair divisions. A prize of $7,500 will be awarded for breaking the masters or wheelchair course records.

Boston Marathon prizes and bonuses have totaled more than nearly $10 million since money prizes were first awarded in 1986.
