103rd BOSTON MARATHONKristiansen's style is crampedBy Shira Springer, Globe Correspondent, 04/20/99
In 1989, she completed the course in 2:24:33. In 1999, fatigue and cramping kept her from the finish line.
''I was here because I was invited, but instead of being here for all the parties, I decided to run the race,'' said Kristiansen. ''I was in really good shape four weeks ago and then I got an injury. I couldn't do the really hard and the really long runs the last four weeks, but I pushed it to the side. I said, `I will make the race, even if I am not fit enough.' But my legs were not prepared for a marathon.
''When I have a number on me, I try to do my best. I know that the masters runners run around 2:40 and I thought maybe I could be around 2:40, between 2:40 and 3 hours.''
Kristiansen was on pace at the halfway mark, passing 13.1 miles in 1:20:03. As she approached the 18-mile mark and the turn onto Commonwealth Avenue, the two-time champion could not continue.
From the start, a nagging pain behind her left calf troubled Kristiansen. She suffered the injury racing on snow and ice in Norway a month ago. The injury limited training and a lack of preparation caught up with her. She decided to drop out rather than miss a month of running with the athletes she coaches in her homeland.
