King was born in Atlanta on Jan. 15, 1929. He attended Morehouse College, where he received a bachelor's degree in sociology. He earned another degree in divinity from Crozer College in Pennsylvania in 1951. While studying for his doctorate in divinity from Boston University, King met and later married Coretta Scott. After graduation in 1954, he became a pastor in Montgomery, Ala. He moved back to Atlanta to become co-pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1960.   King's birthplace is open to the public and run by the National Park Service. Near his Victorian home is the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. Established by Coretta Scott King in 1968, the center serves as the final resting place for the civil rights leader and as an education center devoted to community service and nonviolent activism. The Ebenezer Baptist Church is open to visitors.
