Vengeance at Dachau

Continued from page 69

Testimony of: T/5 John G. Bauerlein (Contd)

537 A No, sir, I don't. I was just standing there and all of a sudden I saw this GI with the "grease gun" walking down hollering to the officer to cover him, and I stood there with my carbine and so did one of the other boys.

538 Q Which other boy?

A I believe it was Veitch, sir.

539 Q How far were these prisoners from the tower when this shooting started?

A They were right along side the canal, I don't know the distance. They were lined up in a double row a couple of feet from the canal.

540 Q And just a few feet from the tower itself?

A The tower was just a little distance away.

541 Q Where were they with reference to this tower?

A They were between the tower and the canal, facing the tower.

542 Q Do you know the number that was painted on that tower?

A No, sir, I don't.

543 Q Do you know where the crematory is?

A Just from what they were talking about it, but I did not see it.

544 Q Did you understand that it was across the canal from this tower?

A From what I heard it was supposed to be on inside the camp and by the railroad someplace.

545 Q You were uncertain about the location of the crematory?

A Yes, sir, that is correct.

546 Q Was the enlisted man who went down with the "grease gun" a sergeant interrogator with one of the infantry regiments?

A I do not know what his duties are, sir. I have heard something mentioned about his duties but I do not know.
