Continued from page 58

Testimony of: Pfc. John R. Veitch, 37621916, Headquarters Company, 42nd Division.

Taken at: Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Date: 15 May 1945 By: Lt. Col. J. M. Whitaker, IGD,

Asst. Inspector General, Seventh Army.

The witness was sworn.

442 Q Please state your name, rank, serial number and organization.

A John R. Veitch, Pfc., 37621916, Headquarters Company, 42nd Division.

(The witness was fully advised of his rights under the 24th Article of War.)

443 Q Do you remember the taking of the Dachau Concentration Camp?

A Yes, sir.

444 Q What were your duties or assignment on that day?

A The same as now, driver of one of the jeeps that goes with General Linden wherever he goes.

445 Q What did you do when you got inside the grounds of the Dachau Camp? Would you tell me in your own words just what happened after you got in?

A As we first entered the camp I believe that Lt. Cowling and T/5 Oddi had taken the first tower, which consisted of about 11 German prisoners. I took them back to the main entrance to the grounds of the camp, then I came back and they had some men that had been taken at the main gate. These prisoners were turned over to somebody else. Then it was taking this tower down here.

446 Q Did you have any trouble taking the prisoners back that were first handed over to you?

A The first bunch there was a couple of young boys that took it as a joke. I told them to fall in and they laughed, but I told them I wasn't kidding and that was all.

447 Q Where was the first tower located that was taken with respect to the main entrance to the stockade proper?

A It was to the right.

448 Q Was there any difficulty in taking the tower to the left of the main entrance to the stockade?
