Closer to home, you could idle away a few sea-breezy days at Wingscorton Farm Inn on the Cape. Located in East Sandwich just off Route 6A, Wingscorton is a handsome manse on a working farm - with barn - that include seven acres of lawn, gardens and orchards, and a short walk to a private ocean beach. Guest rooms, which are all in the house, have working fireplaces. Breakfast is fixed with eggs, breakfast meats, and produce from the farm's livestock and gardens.

This part of the Cape is rich in barns old and new, including the reproduction round barn at Heritage Plantation in Sandwich, a grand exhibition space for vintage automobiles; and the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen with its small, barnlike buildings - including a country kitchen with shining copper countertops.
