Finishing the Big Dig / Photo gallery
Finishing the Big Dig In the ensuing years, things have only gotten worse. In this December 1999 shot, traffic crawls along the Artery near Haymarket Square during afternoon rush hour. The Artery now handles about 190,000 vehicles a day -- more than twice the capacity for which it was designed. Traffic planners estimate the Artery would be gridlocked 15 to 16 hours per day by 2010 if it was not replaced.
