BRUINS 3 DUCKS 2 Thornton, Allison finish Anaheim [ Game summary ]
On the power play, Darren Van Impe dished a pass to Jason Allison (three assists) above the left circle. Allison's shot deflected off Joe Thornton, who was cruising through the slot, and over the glove of Anaheim netminder Guy Hebert with 2:57 left in overtime. It was Thornton's second goal of the game.
Rookie netminder Andrew Raycroft made 28 saves in his second straight victory.
Entering the game, neither Teemu Selanne nor Paul Kariya had a point in the first two games of Anaheim's season. That turned out to be bad and good news for the Bruins.
Boston's penalty killers were called on early to handle a couple of power plays. However, after nullifying an interference infraction to Ken Belanger, Shawn Bates was whistled off for cross-checking at 13:13 and the Ducks cashed in.
Kariya, positioned at the left point, dished to Mike Leclerc, who was deep in the left circle. Leclerc relayed a pass to Selanne in front of the Boston net and he put it past Raycroft at 13:59.
Less than four minutes later, the Bruins had a tailor-made chance to tie when Brian Rolston and Allison charged toward the Anaheim net on a two-on-one break. Allison, in the right circle, sent the puck into the slot, but Rolston's shot clanged off the post.
Raycroft, who picked up his first NHL victory against Florida Monday, was solid again. He faced 14 shots in the first period, denying Ladislav Kohn on the doorstep with 59 seconds left.
In the second, the Bruins rebounded with a pair of power-play goals to take the lead.
At 4:17, Thornton scored his third goal of the season. Rolston set up the play at the point, passing to Allison in the right circle. Allison dished to Thornton in front and he beat Hebert. Boston got the go-ahead goal with 44.8 seconds remaining, with Allison and Rolston teaming up again. Allison fired the puck to Rolston at the right point, and he teed up a slapper that deflected off the boards behind the Anaheim net. The carom came to Andrei Kovalenko, who was positioned just outside the right post. Hebert looked like he lost sight of the puck and Kovalenko shoveled it past the goalie.
Anaheim had plenty of chances in the period. The best came during a two-man advantage the Ducks had for 1:18. Kyle McLaren, Don Sweeney and Allison did a terrific job of thwarting the Ducks. Anaheim didn't get a shot during the five-on-three, with Kariya and Selanne missing the net on several opportunities.
Early in the third, though, the Ducks pulled even on a goal by Jim Cummins, who is better known for his fisticuffs.
Cummins, who entered the season with 18 goals in 365 NHL games and 1,193 minutes in penalties, picked up his second of the year at 2:57, tying the game at 2-2.
Dan Bylsma gained the blue line up the left side of the Bruins' zone and fed into the slot for Cummins. Cummins's quick shot beat Raycroft to the top right corner.
Boston had a brief two-man advantage late in the period but couldn't convert.
However, the Bruins made the Ducks pay in the extra period. Ducks defenseman Ruslan Salei was sent off for slashing Sergei Samsonov; it was Salei's fifth minor penalty of the game.
