Catuna's calling card says, "New York champion, 1996." That's the year she outran world leaders Tegla Loroupe and Joyce Chepchumba in the Big Apple, setting a Romanian national record of 2:28:18. Catuna also won the 1995 World Cup Marathon (2:31:10), leading Romania to a 1-2-3 sweep and the women's team title, and was second at the 1995 World Championships.

In 1998, in her Boston debut, she finished third with a career-best 2:27:34. Last year at Boston, she was a disappointing 10th. Her other New York finishes were fourth in 1994, fourth in 1997 and sixth last year.
