Getting there: The Litchfield Hills are easily accessible from New York
City, Hartford, or Boston. The area is bordered by Route 44 on the north,
Route 7 on the west, Route 84 on the south, and routes 8 and 202 on the
east.
When to go: The region has typical changeable New England weather: snow in
the winter, occasional rain in the spring, crisp in the autumn. Because of the
elevation, summers are not as warm and humid as along the coast. A year-round
destination, the Litchfield Hills can be somewhat crowded in the summer and
during leaf-turning time. To beat the crowds, try spring/early summer and
autumn before the leaves turn.
Places visited: Harney & Sons Tea Tasting Room. Look for the sign on Route
44 just before Lakeville. Open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.to 5 p.m.;
Sunday, noon to 5. Call 800-TEA-TIME.
Wild & Woolly Clarke Outdoors. On Route 7 just south of West Cornwall.
Open March 15 through Dec. 2 for rentals and guided tours of the Housatonic
River. Call 860-672-6365.
Black Duck Boat Shop, 143 West St., New Milford. Open Tuesday through
Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for rentals and guided tours of Lillinonah Lake.
Call 860-350-5170.
More information: The Litchfield Hills has a tremendous variety of
accommodations, from hotels and motels to country inns and bed-and-breakfasts.
