Finishing the Big Dig The dedication of the Central Artery on Oct. 30, 1958. The highway was officially named the John F. Fitzgerald Expressway, after "Honey Fitz," the former Boston mayor, US congressman, and father of Rose Kennedy. That name, though still in place, has fallen out of common use. From left to right are Mayor John B. Hynes, Fitzgerald's wife Mary, and Lt. Gov. Robert Murphy.
