Paul McCarthy
Republican candidate for Congress in the Sixth District
Education: Boston College, BA in Political Science 1978.
Occupation: Television executive.
Experience: Spearheaded initiative drive to eliminate state constitutional restrictions dating back to pre-Civil War, anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant Know Nothings, which prevent parents from receiving direct tax assistance to send their children to the schools of their choice.
Question: Given the current economic climate, what are your priorities for the budget surplus and why?
Answer: I want to return the budget surplus to the American people because it's their money and they deserve a refund.
It's time to overhaul the federal tax code with one that lowers the tax burden on American families.
Congressman John Tierney has defended the present tax system. I want to replace it so more Americans can keep more of their money and decide for themselves how they want to spend and save it.
A simple flat tax would slash the IRS bureaucracy by 94 percent. No more taxes on savings, investments, and estates because your money would be taxed just once. A family of four making $30,000 would be tax free. Taxpayers each year should be given the option of filing by either the flat tax or the present tax code.
Every family would be allowed to pass more of their life's work to the next. Elimination of death taxes would end unfair double taxation on earnings first in life and then in death.
You should be free to own a personal retirement account that allows you the choice of the best investment options and then be able to pass your assets to whom you choose. Or you can stay in the Social Security system. That's your choice.
The difference between John Tierney and myself is that he thinks the government knows best no matter what it costs and what it costs you. I trust that the American people will choose wisely for themselves.
