In compiling the information for this Voters Guide, the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts, under the auspices of the Lotte E. Scharfman Memorial Fund, sent questionnaires by certified mail to all candidates whose names were provided by the office of the secretary of state. The League of Women Voters formulated the wording of all questions asked of the candidates. The difficulty of identifying sticker, write-in, and nonparty candidates makes it impossible to include them in this Voters Guide.

The information in this guide is in the candidates' own words. Where replies exceeded the word limits set by the League of Women Voters, answers were cut by the League to fit the required limit. All candidates were informed of this process in the mailing. In most cases, photographs were furnished by the candidates. Neither the League of Women Voters nor the Globe assumes responsibility for replies not received, for replies received after the stated copy deadline, or for questionnaires that were returned as undeliverable by the US Postal Service. Addresses of candidates for the offices of US president, US senator, US House of Representatives, and the Massachusetts General Court used in the mailing were provided by the secretary of state's office.
