A letter to the voters

Dear Voters:

The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts is proud to bring you the Voters Guide to Election 2000. We appreciate the generosity of The Boston Globe in publishing this guide as a public service to the citizens of Massachusetts.

The League of Women Voters, born 80 years ago out of the women's suffrage movement, promotes the informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League has always maintained a strict policy on nonpartisanship. While we advocate our positions on policy issues, we never support or oppose political parties or candidates. We are widely known and respected for our impartial and fair work in voters service and educational activities. Through its voter education fund - the Lotte E. Scharfman Memorial Fund - the League of Women Voters operates a Voter Information Phone, publishes voter information pamphlets, holds forums on public policy issues, conducts voter registration drives, sponsors candidates debates and get-out-the-vote campaigns.

This year voters are urged to visit the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts Voters Online Web Site for more election information, candidates issues grid, media links, and information on the eight ballot questions at www.dnet.org/MA. Membership in the league is open to everyone. The men and women who belong to our local leagues throughout the state share a commitment to encourage political responsibility. We hope that you, too, share that commitment.

Democracy is not a spectator sport. Voting is the primary means for making democracy work. At a time when people around the world are valiantly pursuing their dream of democracy, we urge you to exercise your right to vote on Nov. 7.

Sincerely,

Nancy Carapezza, President,
League of Women Voters of Massachusetts
