OCKE MILLS, Maine -- The Old Time Dance held here every other Saturday night in the old town hall has been going on only 18 years, but the memories reach back decades.
"This was a way of life back in Prohibition days, the Saturday night dances," recalls Robert Keniston, 80. "This hall was really alive. It usually took two sheriffs to control the crowd. The rum runners were going through here from Canada. They were drinking what they call split -- half grape soda and half 200-proof alcohol. Can you imagine what took place on the dance floor?
"This hall is very sentimental to a lot of people. It brings back memories of when we were kids coming here thinking we were big shots, out on the dance floor with the old-timers."
