Born in a barn

By Kristen Cashman

Gail Bohan has merged her two passions, interior design and environmentalism, in her aptly named Somerville shop, Eco-Interiors. The new store carries an array of home furnishings and accessories, all made of recycled or sustainably produced materials: glassware, hemp table linens, organic cotton bedding, novelty housewares, and furniture.

Our favorite product line is Barn Again furniture. Rather than sacrificing living trees to obtain lumber, the designers at Barn Again salvage wood from unused barns in the Midwest, most 80 to 100 years old.

The furniture ranges from an old-fashioned step stool with drawers to larger pieces, including tables, hutches, and armoires. Each comes with a drawing and description of the barn from which it was made. Eco-Interiors is at 694 Broadway, in Ball Square, Somerville, 617-623-0907, or visit www.eco-interiors.com.
