Have coat, will travel

By Tina Cassidy

This may look like ordinary, run-of-the-Italian-mill outerwear. But it's not. The broad-patch quilted coat, part of a new clothing line from Samsonite - yes, that would be the 90-year-old luggage company - is built for the modern traveler. The zippered compartment around the collar hides an inflatable neck supporter, which comes in handy for midflight catnaps. The blow-up pillow is removable, attached with Velcro. On the inner panel of the coat is a plastic slot for a name tag, just like those you'd find on a suitcase, in case you absent-mindedly leave behind the toasty and water-repellent coat in the overhead compartment of a plane. The three-quarter length is long enough to cover a blazer, casual enough to wear with jeans.

Samsonite creative director Gigi Vezzola, formerly of the sexy Italian design house Dolce & Gabbana, was brought into the company to establish the label as a sought-after brand, but mostly for travelers who hang their coats in first class.

Men's Samsonite Pillow Puff nylon coat, in black, sells for $740. Available at Tess, 20 Brattle Street, Cambridge, and 1241 Centre Street, Newton.
