Janice (Goldsmith), 92, of Xenia, Ohio died August 25th while under Hospice care at Greene Oaks Health Center in Xenia. Born September 6, 1908 and a native of Salem, Mass., she also lived in North Reading, Hamilton, and Wenham, Mass. before moving to Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1980 and a sister, Desire Goldsmith in 1998. Janice is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Eloise Pulsifer of Xenia, grand-daughter Bethany (Mrs. Jeffrey) Hobbs of Lewis Center, Ohio. She also leaves a sister Rachel Robinson of Bozeman, Montana, brother and sister-in-law Richard and June Goldsmith of Marblehead, Mass.; also several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was a member of The First Church of Salem (Unitarian). Janice was a graduate of Wheaton College, Norton, Mass. and also The Business School of Simmons College, Boston. For many years she was Administrative Secretary at the Simmons College School of Social Work. She was active in Red Cross training in North Reading, Mass. and also did administrative work for A. F. Goldsmith & Co. of Salem. She served many years as treasurer of her Wheaton College Class of 1929. An avid reader, Janice served as a trustee of the Hamilton, Mass. Public Library. Janice had a professional interest in historical and literary research which resulted in the publication of several articles in the Essex Institute Historical Collections, including articles on Alice and Phoebe Cary, Ohio poets of the early 19th century, also theologian-naturalist Manasseh Cutler who led the early settlement of The Northwest Territory. Her illustrated book, Changing Town, a bicentennial history of the Town of Hamilton, Mass. was published in 1976. Janice was a founding member of the Hamilton, Mass. Historical Society. She also served many years as a volunteer hostess, guide and researcher for the Wenham, Mass. Historical Society & Museum and was honored for her volunteer work at the Greene County Historical Society in Xenia. She was also a member of the Xenia Branch, American Association of University Women. Arrangements are with the Neeld Funeral Home of Xenia. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation nor services. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery at Salem, Mass. will be at the convenience of the family.
